Songs from the Canopy - Flight patterns

"Musical Banter" : Birds on the brain. There’s something mesmerising about birds — the way they move, the way they sound. Flying or singing, sometimes both. Multi-talents.

Two kōtare in a tree at our Karangahake whenua

Tuatahi - first

Disintegrate - Wild Pink

"I’m just like an eagle / Flying down Meeker/ On a rented e-bike/ I don’t have to try "

Pitchfork called it "stately and sweeping," with "swathes of fuzz". The fuzz covers the album "Dulling the horn" and is a super backdrop for scribbled sax that meanders through it.  Play on BandCamp

Tuarua - Second Songbird

Bird’s Lament - Moondog  (1969)

Composed in 1955 as a tribute to jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker, nicknamed "Bird," following his death. You might recognise it from Mr. Scruff’s “Get a Move On.” But the original? It’s sparser, soulful, a bit haunting. Not just music

Listen to the OG on Bandcamp

Tuatoru - Final Flight

Kōkako mix  - 2009 ish

Not quite a conventional mix — more like a time capsule of forest echoes and playlist gems. Made around 2009, it weaves in music with snippets of kōkako birdsong (arguably Aotearoa's most magical sound). If you haven't heard the Nick Zimmer mix of Gold Lion it is a treat.  The gold lion while not strictly a bird with a little time travel we find the Griffin

🎵 The Raconteurs – Steady as She Goes (Saturday Session Mix)
🐋 The Good, the Bad and the Queen – Northern Whale
🇮🇹 Mussolini – La Victori

Killer Burn knee - Spinners

Killer Bernie was another great wormhole.

Three tracks survived revisits and an playlist  to go with it

Track choice 1 Televised executions - Suicide - 2002

This has got that unique Vega delivery provokes thought. ROLL with Da Bass Groove.

There are some subtle differences.

between homicide, murder and manslaughter

Track 2 Terror Couple Kill Colonel Bauhaus - Remastered
I was never a huge Bauhaus fan. On recent listens I see this is both original and powerful track that has a special sound. "In May 1972, the Red Army Faction, then known as the Baader-Meinhof group, detonated three bombs outside the officers' club of the Fifth Corps headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany, killing an American lieutenant colonel and injuring 13 others."

Track 3 Black Harmony Killer - Jah Stitch -1977

From the land of Don Letts and the Black Harmony soundsystem of 1977.
Like the way songs like this sat in the between band space of the UK Punk Scene.
Not about murder but a killer sound

Killer Soundtrack
Selected some tracks that could fit in the soundtrack of an unsettling film about murder.  One for my archives. a match for something like a Rivers edge

Furniture Spinners

The spinners hunt is always a pleasure. Glad that this one resulted in such a fine selection of clearly relatables.

Won't muck around let's head straight to the picks and why.

Chaise Longue - Wet Tounge

Chosen for continued reference to a great furniture genre. (strangely I had picked up on this song recently) Look out for the anonymous woman in the video. If there was a chance to get a track on the speakers tonight - this would be my choice.

The Sofa Song - The Kooks
Somewhere in England the Kooks  - let this out of the bag . Like the energy of Northern England. Prior to the spat they had with the Arctic Monkeys.

Shirelles - Putty in your Hands
This one is straight from the Jim Jarmusch play book.
Think Putty was a well used furniture product back in the day.
Shirrelles putty in your hands NICE.

Blinded me with science

Dearest Spinner folk

Jamie offered guidance to the selection of songs relating to science.

It was as follows.

For those who need more definition I'll suggest the following;
Science is a fact-based belief system that seems to be functionally and accurately describing the world we're in - but we could always find out more.
I will also suggest that we avoid - Science Fiction and Space-based themes and maybe Meteorology (sorry Mark but songs about the weather are another theme).

We should be concentrating on Physics, Paleontology, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, etc.

I have loosely followed this with a "can I justify connection to the brief with this".
Based a series of songs on states of matter and not the Hydraulophone seen below

Had fun - scoot through - click if you feel inclined - enjoy the spinners search.

Hydraulophone in warm pool

States

Solid

Icehouse - nothing to do - Flowers
Liked this one for 36 years now - a good innings.

Melting
Leftfield - Melt - Leftism
Turn of the lights - pump up the the volume enjoy the electrocism.
Melt was built from a selection of samples from 1980’s influenced jazz and ambient records reflecting our obsession to make Leftism a journey that defied contemporary views of what a dance album should sound like

Liquid
The Doors - Under the waterfall - Stone inmaculate
Ejoyed hearing this chilled mix for the first time
Sounds contempory

Evaporation
Baby bird - Steam Train - Bad shave
Always get you. thinking
Is that a suitcase in your hand?
Or just a black box that fell from the plane
That crashed when I met you?
Great keyboard riff

Gas
Ethyl methyl ether, or methoxyethane, is a colorless gas at room temperature, having a boiling point of 7.6ºC. Like dimethyl ether, it is fairly water soluble. Diethyl ether, or ethoxyethane, or just plain ether, is a colorless liquid at room temperature, having a boiling point of 34.6ºC.
Turin Brakes - Stone thrown - from Ether Song

Guitar meander near end of track

Ionisation
Hard to find ions irons will do
Monkey - March of the Iron Army - Journey to the west
Ahhh Piggsy

Plasma
The Plasmatics - Butcher baby -
Complete with chainsaw enough said

Energy
They all require energy
Spizzenergi aka Athletico Spizz 80 - New Species - Do a runner
Keeps with the theme and another long time listen
Peel Session

3 goodies from 2020 for me

3 of the best

Chaka kahn - Like Sugar

Feel good hit with Sassy dancing - bongo solo . Was a tad disappointed to see her lipsynch this on Graham Norton.

Could be a late entry to the Drummer spinners

Cornershop - Cash money

The meandering guitar line in this track is sublime effortless and mesmerising.
Look a the star and have a listen. If you have too pump it up a bit there is a subtle distortion.
Go on you know you want to.
Purchase from Bandcamp

Porridge Radio - Give Take

Like the lines in this and a bit of attitude to go with it. The Vocals are plaintiff and a raw reflection.
An interesting take on lust and power

Video - politics

It was great to see this topic come up in the spinners calendar.

I may have taken some liberty with it . Anyways I have to confess an interest in political speeches historical and present. A couple of years ago I included them in some mash up / remixes.
I thought add some video and Bob Roberts is your uncle, erm president. full screen + volume + rough + ready.
Updated 24th July to remove amateur cursor visibility (other amateur effects  remain ;-) ... )

Ingredients

Sounds :
  • Arnold Schwarzenegger - 38th Governor California
  • Jayz - December 4th - Black album
  • Wolf Parade - This heart's on fire - Apologies to Queen Mary

Revolution - if I was a top knotch poet.

Hey spinners - revolution - Session

Interestingly last months - Muslim theme may have had a number of songs that could translate into this theme. A short spell at the Hokitika airport to make my revolution noises known.

1 Linton Kwesi Johnson
This fulla has revolution in his bones it runs across more than the song titles - Deeper.
A quick look and I find this book -
So the song well I am alway keen on a new LKJ listen  "Blame it on the working class it is"

2 Stiff Little Fingers - Reflecting the need for something different. Beyond the troubles - Beyond the walls. Again a band looking around them  at the Belfast Peace Walls. Revolution --- Alternative

3 "Fight the power/ We've got to fight the powers that be." It glares at the oppressive systems in place dead on. - Found this in protest songs and thinking protest songs is a neutered revolution.

Asian songs - Islam - Immigration - racism

Mona Haydar - American
This woman has got a forthright out there voice on : the hijab ,  and a few other things. Liked her immediately when I heard she was from Flint Michigan

The track American is fab in my mind“American”:
“They don’t want to see me as American/ See me on your TV as a terrorist/ All I wanna do is have some fun by the beach, man/ But here come ICE and that travel ban.” White supremacy/nationalism comes for us, but we’re going to turn up and enjoy our lives in spite of that nastiness. In this song, we have no time for ugliness, we’re too busy basking in the glorious sunlight and getting a lovely tan as our skin turns even browner. We subvert and resist injustice simply by being JOYFULLY ourselves.

American

You’re just jealous of my sisters
These Mipsters, These hippies
These Prissies, These Sufis
These Dreddies, These Sunnis
These Shii’s, Yemenis
Somalis, Libnanis, Pakistanis
These Soories, Sudanis
Iraqis, Punjabies
Afghanis, Yazeedis
Khaleejis, Indonesians
Egyptians, Canadians
Algerians, Nigerians
Americans, Libyans
Tunisians, Palestinians
Hidden beyond the Mekong in laos
Senegalese and Burkina faso

Had a great time tracking a few songs down the immediate thought was of Asian Dub Foundation not knowing if they had any muslim members, beliefs etc.

Headed to Bandcamp where I am looking a-lot more lately as a a place beyond the subscription and live music attendance to support artists.

So ... Nazrul

Kazi Nazrul Islam was an islamic rebel poet inspiring ADF to write about him - on

Post Punk

So having said I would post monthly a reflection on the spinning theme. I have slipped by the wayside. In my defence we had a debilitating fire.

I have alway considered post punk to be time specific and happy to stick with 1979- 84 for my selections.

First up - Dexy's Midnight Runners - Couldn't help it if I tried

I have returned to this album a number of times and in the right moment there is something special here. A big brass section and some bold plaintive vocals. Singing about being an irishmen in England. Liked it because it is live. Here is what the Dexy's ended up doing in 2017 .

Second pick - Ceremony - Radiohead cover

Picked because this song is done well by them particularly guitar and vocals - the transition of Joy Division / Warsaw punk to Joy Division / New Order post punk

Last up in the trio Cure - Forest first ever live performance - Young folk and interesting to see the density of the soundscape. Missed them playing in P North.

That's all folks

So top of my list is faux? folk.

The song is Queen Mary from the Coen brother's film Inside Llewellyn Davis. I love this song: simple and old-school (500 Plus). It is made better at the end when the agent Oscar Isaac is trying to impress isn't!

Track two

Another one from the screen - The Leftovers - was a standout series for me in 2017 for the unpredictability and thought provoking look at religion the afterlife and the here and now.
And the track is Iris Dent - let the mystery be
Here for the voice, lyrics and the enjoyment had listening to it 10 times watching Leftovers.

Track 3 And Lastly Bobby Boy - hard rains going to fall - 1963 .  Like the conversation and the lyrical gauntlet.  Sung by Patti Smith at the Nobel Prize - award -
